August first, twenty twenty-four. Field note from the kitchen floor. This started, an innocuous looking, dark block. A web of filaments spread, slowly, over two weeks. When the block transformed to a white lattice work, I cut back the plastic bag to let the mycelium flex. Here's the one thing I keep turning over: that pale crust on the block isn't a coating, it's the organism. The mushrooms are the fruit. The block is the tree. When the mycelium decides conditions are right — a drop in temperature, a bump in humidity, fresh air — it pins, and within days you get caps at the edges where the block meets the world. The fruiting bodies are the apples; the white web inside is the orchard. Next time you see a mushroom, picture the quiet network underneath that spent months or years building it.
