Castel del Piano, Tuscany — August 14, 2024

Water cascades over and through weathered, pale rock formations into a small dark pool below.

August 14, 2024. Castel del Piano, Tuscany. I followed a rumor of water down through the woods and found a gorge the color of bottle glass — pale rock weathered into shelves, a froth of white where the stream slid over the lip into a dark pool below. People were already there ahead of me. Two floated near the reeds. A child in a striped shirt waded in the shallows while sunlight came down through the leaves in pieces. Later, back in the village, a friend opened a cellar door I would have walked past a hundred times. One bulb. Wine bottles on wooden shelves. Iron keys hung on the stone like punctuation. One core thing I want to remember from this day: in this part of Tuscany the cold things live underground — the river in its gorge, the wine in its cellar. The heat sends everything down to the stone to keep.

An overhead view of a natural rocky pool in a wooded gorge, where several people are swimming and lounging in shallow green water.
