Castelnuovo Berardenga, Tuscany — August 18, 2024

August 18, 2024. Castelnuovo Berardenga. I almost drove past the gate — a wrought-iron arch swallowed in vine, brick pillars crowded with painted ceramic griffins, pelicans, a small white lion guarding a children's swing set. Nobody around. I walked a hundred meters up the lane and the noise of the place fell off a cliff. Just a cypress, an outbuilding, olive trees stepping down the hill, and that hazy Sienese blue going on forever. Here's the thing I keep noticing in Tuscany: the loud, hand-painted joy and the quiet, ancient landscape live one hedgerow apart. You don't choose between them. You walk through one to see the other.
